The field of membership will comprise of employees of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and selected affiliates. They are identified as primary members, immediate and extended family members. Primary member is the individual holding the PAHO contract under any of the categories listed below. Immediate family member is defined as spouse, children and parents; and extended family member is defined as brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, grandparents, grandchildren. The PAHO contracting mechanisms, regardless of source of funding include:
1. Official contract categories:
a. Staff holding career appointments.
b. Staff holding fixed-term appointments.
c. Staff under temporary employment such as:
- PAHO Temporary appointments
- "While Actually Employed" (WAEs) Staff
d. Employees in all PAHO Offices and Centers in various other employment categories including the following:
- Short-term Consultants (STCs)
- National Officers (NOs)
- Short Term Professionals (STPs)
- Associate Professionals (APOs)
- Associate Experts (AEs)
- Professional Detail Appointments to PAHO
e. Employees in PAHO Country Offices and Centers under local conditions of employment:
- Contratos Locales de Trabajo (CLTs)
- National Professionals (NAPs)
- Ministry of Health staff detailed/assigned to PAHO
- Agency and Foundation staff
The above contracting mechanisms require at least a three-month contract, assignment or detail with/to PAHO/WHO.
2. PAHO retirees
3. Surviving and dependent spouses and children of PAHO retirees.
4. Employees of contractors who work regularly at the PAHO/WHO buildings in Washington, D.C. and who have at least a three-month contract with the company, including:
a. International Building Services (IBS) staff
b. The PAHO/WHO Staff Association staff
c. Agency staff
d. Other regular individual contractors (programmers, translators, interpreters, etc.) with prior approval by the Membership Officer
Once the PAHO ends its contractual relationship with the company/contractor, its employees cease to have this opportunity.
5. Associations and groups of current or retired PAHO staff members in the Washington Metropolitan Area and the countries of the Western Hemisphere who are officially recognized by PAHO and have been approved by the Board of Directors following a positive recommendation by the Membership Officer (Example: Staff Associations in the Country Offices).
6. Employees of the PAHO/WHO Federal Credit Union who have successfully completed the probationary period and their relatives as defined in the first paragraph.
7. Employees of the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) and their relatives as defined in the first paragraph.
